Rise to popularity-

Kilts have been an essential part of scottish formal wear for centuries and during that time there has been a wide variety of trends within highland wear & tartans especially with increased yarn dyes and wedding colour schemes changing over the years.

Most original tartans tend to feature some of the vivid primary colours or bright greens, most tartans feature at least one of these but with such a varied palette of tartan colours there's bound to be fan favourites. There is thousands of red, green , navy & yellow based tartans but these can be limited to style, super bright colourful tartans usually have be styled with a dark / black jacket to compliment the bright hues.

Over the years more muted, fainted, light coloured tartans have emerged as popular kilt choices as the more muted , earthy tones give a wider variety of colour combinations & expand the range & colours of accessories and jackets that can be curated. Alongside this, these types of colours fit into more neutral wedding colour palettes more than a bright red tartan or a bright blue.

Earth tones like faint blues, muted greens , ambers, burgundy's, warm greys & browns all compliment each other well and means if you have a green brown blue-ish tartan you could pair this with any of those colour jackets & accessories and allows much more customisation to kilt outfits.

Earth tone tartans have appealed to people due to their versatility and tend to be more classic & timeless. These types of colour palettes are often reminiscing of scottish landscape and colours found within our environments. These muted shades tend to work well for all seasons and most events so they are found to be more popular in modern formal wear.

Green Tartans-

Green tartans are among some of the most popular and most hired tartans as there is an astonished amount and variation of green tartans from super muted sage greens to deep dark Forrest greens. Grass toned greens and sage greens are ideal for a spring summer look without being too garish. Here's a few examples just to name a few with mixed undertones and examples of green.

Brown tartans-

Brown tartans are the classic underdog tartans, not as common as green and blue tones but there's many beautiful warm chocolate brown, tan toned tartans in a variation of colour schemes. Brown tartans can be styled with tan, sage, silver, burnt orange & dark grey/ black jackets to create a super sophisticated look. Here's a few examples:

Weathered / Muted tartans-

Part of the reasons there is now thousands of tartans as the tartan register has expanded with new designs, names & more. Variations of tartans have been made of classic family names so 1 Robertson tartan might be now 3-4 different tartans usually variations of the original pattern. Weathered and muted tartans tend to be a more withered down variation of original name tartans and commonly feature more earth tone / neutral colours. See below for some examples:

Styling-

The beauty of these types of tartans is there versatility they usually aren't dominated with excessive bright colours meaning you have a few colour options for jackets and accessories instead of just a basic black jacket.

Each tartan is different but for warmer tartans with browns , oranges & caramel tones we recommend a brown jacket, shoes & socks with a warm toned sporran. For sage green. Light blue grey based tartans we recommend one of our green lovat tweeds or a silver tweed jacket to compliment cool tones.
