Choosing a Tartan -
When choosing a tartan there is ample choice but sometimes you might not know where to start. There are a few ways to decide where to start narrowing down tartans:
Family / Clan Name Tartans
Most people will wear their family name tartan if they have one or see if they derive from a Scottish sept / clan & wear that tartan as tribute to their ancestors & heritage.
Although there are thousands of clan & family tartans, some names Just don't have a clan / name tartan as tartans only date back so far and many different names would share a tartan.
For example, the Malcolm clan includes families such as, MacColl, McCallum, MacCalum, McAllum, Malcolmson, Malcollm, Malcom, Malcomb, Malcome, Malcomson, Malcum & MacCallam.
Septs are like smaller family branches of a clan, they don't necessarily need to share the same name, septs were usually collated by sometimes similar families, people who shared land, people with similar political view and many more group affiliations.
Despite clan & family tartans being rich in history & worn by descendants, there is no rules against wearing a clan tartan that isn't yours. Tartan is open to everyone of all backgrounds.
Neutral Tartans
Many people especially in modern times, chose to opt for a more neutral tartan, popular colours include greys, greens, earth-tone, and more simplified tartans.
Some tartans can be very loud and busy and that isn't necessarily everyone's taste. Thankfully with such a wide range of tartans we offer there is a tartan for everyone.
Neutral tartans are easily to style and most people find it more comfortable hiring a neutral colour tartan kilt outfit as its more classic and subtle and less garish than a super bold tartan. Greys, blacks, greens and brown all style with a classic black, grey, brown & charcoal jackets.
